What is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?

I'm Bjorn Vandemeulebroucke, managing partner of a Word of Mouth Agency and author of Become the Answer. For over twenty years my work has been getting real people to recommend brands. Now that AI does the recommending, I measure and improve how brands show up in its answers.

The definition, and why it's a different game from SEO. Doubles as your glossary anchor.
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of getting your brand named inside the answers AI assistants give: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, instead of ranked on a list of links. Where SEO earned you a position on the page, AEO earns you the recommendation itself.
For twenty years the goal was simple: rank. You optimised your pages for a search engine, climbed the list, and let the buyer do the choosing. That worked because search handed people ten blue links and then stepped back.
Answer engines do not step back. Ask one what to buy and it reads across the web, weighs the sources, and hands back a single recommendation, often three brands, sometimes one. There is no page two. You are named, or you are invisible.
AEO is the discipline built for that world. Instead of optimising for an algorithm that sorts links, you build for a model that reads, trusts, and decides. Success stops being measured in traffic and clicks, and starts being measured in mentions, citations, and recommendations: your share of the answer.
The reassuring part is that the work is less alien than it sounds. AI recommends what it can read clearly, what other people vouch for, and what it can identify without confusion. That means genuinely useful content, honest reviews, and a consistent brand identity: the things good marketers were building all along. AEO just makes them the whole game.
The move, in one line: from being found, to being the answer.
How is AEO different from SEO?
SEO wins a ranking on a list of links a person then chooses from. AEO wins your brand a place inside the single answer an AI gives instead. SEO competes for a position; AEO competes to be the answer itself.
